Pre-Calc - Section 11.5 odds
Ax2 + Bxy + Cy2 + Dx +Ey +F = 0 General Form
Case where B=0, (A≠C = 0)
- If AC=0, we have parabola
- If AC>0, we have an ellipse
- or circle if A=C
- If AC<0, we have a hyperbola
(General Case)
If B2 - 4AC = 0 -- a parabola
If B2 - 4AC < 0 -- an ellipse or circle
If B2 - 4AC >0 -- a hyperbola
cot(2θ) = A - C
B
Procedure:
1. Determine rotation of axes (θ)
2. Sketch new axes.
3. Algebraically transform General Form into standard form.
4. Graph conic on new axes using standard methods.
