Page 420 to 423, alternative odds.

Pre-Calc - Section 11.5 odds

Ax2 + Bxy + Cy2 + Dx +Ey +F = 0 General Form
Case where B=0, (A≠C = 0)

- If AC=0, we have parabola

- If AC>0, we have an ellipse
- or circle if A=C

- If AC<0, we have a hyperbola
(General Case)

If B2 - 4AC = 0 -- a parabola

If B2 - 4AC < 0 -- an ellipse or circle

If B2 - 4AC >0 -- a hyperbola

cot(2θ) = A - C

Procedure:

1. Determine rotation of axes (θ)

2. Sketch new axes.

3. Algebraically transform General Form into standard form.

4. Graph conic on new axes using standard methods.
