This can be frustrating for some students, who simply want someone to tell them the "right way" or to explain "what they did wrong." But this analysis skill is critical to moving to the next level of math understanding, and for critical thinking.

Algebra I - Tests graded and handed back today. Students must now do a "Fix and Reflect".

By Monday....

1) FIX the incorrect problems.
2) FIND and identify what they did wrong. For example, "I multiplied 2 x 3 and got 5".
3) REFLECT upon the root cause. There are four root causes for math errors.
--- Concept - I really didn't understand what we were doing.
--- Mechanics - I didn't practice this type of problem enough in homework.
--- Precision - I made a "stupid" mistake because I didn't read the instructions carefully enough, or I dropped a minus sign or I added instead of multiplying, etc.
--- State Of Mind - I was running a fever the day we covered this in class or I was up until 2 AM the night before the test, or I had my mind on the big game, etc.

The idea is that the student will begin to see a pattern of root causes, which will help them correct in the future.

3) Homework will be posted here approximately weekly or more often. Students are encouraged to check their work in the back of the book as they work the homework. We go over homework almost every day for questions. Encourage your child to ask questions on problems they don't understand.

Anyone interested in Summer Geometry or Algebra II, please contact the school. The cost is $200, you must have had an A or B in the previous course, and be ready to work a lot at home. There are just 16 class sessions. Geometry is Tuesday/Thursdays at 8 AM to 10 AM. Algebra II is Tuesday/Thursdays at 10 AM to 12 Noon. I'll be teaching both classes. This is a good opportunity to get ahead a year if you want to take AP Calculus I or II your senior year, something that normally only happens if you started Algebra I as an 8th grader or 7th grader. This isn't just for PCHS students, but is open to all students from the area that have the previous math grades, so if you have a friend who's considering Catholic, tell them about these courses.

Thanks to the good people at DuPont, I'll be spending March 9-12 in San Francisco at the National Science Teachers Association on the mathematics track, trying to pick up some new ideas for us at PCHS.

Mid-Terms...

Mid Term Exams are worth 20% of the Semester Grade.

I will be holding a tutoring/study session on Tuesday, Jan 12, from 3 to 4 PM in my room for students who have questions. Please plan to attend.

Periods 1, 2, 3 Exams are given on Wednesday, Jan 13.
Periods 4, 5 Exams are given on Thursday, Jan 14.
Periods 6, 7 Exams are given Friday, Jan 15.

Algebra I - Do ALL the Mixed Review sections of Homework, starting with Chapter 6 and moving toward the beginning of the book. This is recommended, not required. Do ALL the Chapter Tests, starting at Chapter 6 and moving toward the beginning of the book. The Test is on Chapters 1 to 6.

Trig - The test is on Chapters 1 to 5. Suggest reviewing by doing the Cumulative Tests.

Pre-Calculus - The test is on Chapters 1 to 6, and 10. Suggest reviewing by using the Chapter reviews.

Calculus - The Test is on Chapters 1 to 6. Suggest reviewing by working the sample test handed out in class on Monday, Jan 11.

I hope you are having fun with the snow.

Unfortunately, next week we will have semester finals. You will need to be prepared. Here are some suggested items to do while snowed in....There is nothing new here except in the Calculus class.

Algebra I
Do ALL the Mixed Reviews in Chapters 1 to 6. Do all the problems in each of these Mixed Reviews. Tell your friends.

Pre-Calculus
Do the Chapter Reviews in Chapters 3 to 6 and Chapter 10. Tell your friends.

Trigonometry
Do the cumulative tests. The final will be on everything we have covered. tell your friends.

Calculus
Because of lack of time, we will have the Chapter 6 Test on Monday/Tuesday. Please tell the others.
We will have the mid-term test on Friday.
